Blackwood River Foundation Launches Strategic Plan at
International Riversymposium in Perth

The Blackwood River Foundation today launched its Strategic Plan at the International
Riversymposium in Perth.

Mr Martin Albrecht AC, Chairman of the International River Foundation, took part in the
launch of the strategic recovery plan for the Blackwood River in Western Australia.
“The Blackwood River Foundation was founded through the international recognition of the
Blackwood Basin Group by award of the International Riverprize in 2001. Therefore, the
International Riversymposium is indeed a fitting venue for the launch of this strategic plan
for the Blackwood,” said Mr Albrecht.

“The Blackwood Basin Group is the only Australian group to be awarded this international prize and the group has shown its commitment to natural resource management and community resilience in the long term by creating the Foundation,” Mr Albrecht continued.

The Blackwood River Foundation’s Strategic Plan outlines where it will invest in the 22,000 square kilometre catchment of the Blackwood River.

“The aim of restoring the river is particularly appropriate for the integrity of the southwestern
corner of the continent. The goal of increasing the range of marron from Augusta
to Kojonup is both achievable and admirable, as an indicator of water quality, and as an
asset so much enjoyed by the community,” Mr Albrecht concluded.

Chairman of the BRF, Mr David Reid, said the hard work the Board had invested developing
the Strategic Plan will pave the way for broad industry and community involvement in the
future of the river.

“As the International Riversymposium is being held in WA for the first time this year it
provides the opportunity to showcase the outstanding achievements of the communities of
the Blackwood River,” Mr Reid said.
